Grant couldn’t remember ever being so furious. He pulled Ava into his arms, pressing her against his far side, so he was between them. His anger cranked up several notches when he realized that Willy had touched Ava. By the terror in her eyes, Grant suspected the weasel had threatened her again.

“My business…” he hissed, pausing for emphasis, “is anywhere I want it to be. Right now, my business is here in Seattle. More specifically, my business is with Halliday Hotels and more specifically, Ava Halliday.” He released Ava, pushing her gently behind him so that Willy couldn’t even see her. He loomed threateningly over the smelly man. “I know that you are going to be a good boy and leave Ava and her family alone. Aren’t you?”

Zanika bared his teeth like the rabid animal that he was. For a long moment, the two of them stared each other down, but Willy knew who was in charge here. He backed down with a little “snick” as he once again sucked the saliva between his teeth and gums.

“So…when did this little romance start?”

“Eight years ago,” Grant snarled. “Get out of this building. And don’t ever come back.” Grant stepped even closer. “In fact, don’t even walk the street around this hotel or any hotel within the Halliday umbrella. Do I make myself clear?”

Grant’s lips curled into a slight smirk. “I’ll email you a copy.” Zanika’s eyes widened and, finally, there was a hint of nervousness in those dark depths. “Would be a shame if the police were monitoring your email accounts, wouldn’t it?”

Neither man spoke for another long moment. Finally, Zanika backed down, muttered a curse, and stalked away.

Grant sighed, released the tension in his shoulders, then turned to look for Ava. She’d been shaking like a leaf, damn it! Zanika had scared her! What the hell had Willy said to her before he’d arrived?

Unfortunately, Ava had vanished. Where the hell had she gone?

He made his way out of the hotel and into the executive offices. “I’d like to speak with Ava Halliday. I don’t have an appointment,” he explained to the receptionist sitting at the front.

The woman, a younger woman in her early twenties, very politely said, “I’m sorry but Ms. Halliday has left the office for the day.”

Grant’s gaze sharpened on her in alarm. “When? When did she leave?”

The receptionist’s eyes widened at the urgency in his tone. She shrugged, then explained, “Just a moment ago. I know that she was inspecting the ballroom, but she came back looking…well, not well. She went to her office, grabbed her purse, and left.”

Grant rubbed the bridge of his nose, then nodded. “Thank you.” With that, he left the executive offices. He’d driven here this time,
